Front Cover

This is my final front cover. This is an improvement from the first one I had tried done. The logo is much more improved, I've changed the puff and the font of the words in the banner and I've made the barcode smaller. I feel that this is more presentable than previous attempts I'd made before. Overall, I'm happy with this and feel that it does attract the rap genre as my model is not exactly smiling and cheery as you would expect in a pop magazine. When researching my star images for this genre, the artists on the front cover don't seem to smile.. however they connote seriousness and 'no-play' as such. I feel that my model has done this very well. The colour scheme , yet again, has been kept to and maintained throughout the cover, contents and 2 page spread.

Contents Page

This is my final contents page. As you can see I have tried to follow the 'Empire' Magazine contents page as that was my template. I wanted my contents page to be simple and not crammed with page numbers and information, as its not necessarily a page where the reader should be on for long. I also added Facebook and Twitter links at the bottom as I realise a few magazines tend to do this for their audiences. I also remembered to make the same page numbers as my two page spread that I had done separately as people tend to forget to do so. I also incorporated a banner much like my template also.

Contents Template.

2 Page Spread

This is my final 2 page spread. I have made the interview continue to both pages and the picture is slightly stretched across the two also. I included a little picture at the bottom right of two of my models, however made them to be in a relationship that the audience would know about. I remembered to include the logo again on the bottom right next to the page number as my Empire magazine does similar to this. I also did efficiently secure the red, black and white colour scheme which was something crucial that I was trying to maintain.
The sub-heading is like some I've seen when reading magazines myself and thought it would be a perfect little intro for the interview at the bottom.
I included a caption at the bottom left of the main picture, saying 'Mammi-C (pictured above) poses for Rap-id'. I remembered that most magazines have these little captions informing the reader of what is going on in the pictures on the page.
The only distinctive 'problem' would maybe be the shadow in the main picture, however, the audience wouldn't necessarily critique this minor error as they'd be far more interested in Mammi-C's answers.

Evaluation Q6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt a lot about technologies and programs as I have constructed this product. Things I hadn't done before like, creating magazines, editing photos to a good standard and using blogs have increased my knowledge efficiently. I will definitely use what I have learnt in the future if I intend to do similar work to this. Also I can use techniques I have learnt for even little things like making cards etc.

The photo above is me constructing my two page spread. InDesign is probably the most complicated programme I learnt to use. At first it was just a load of buttons and little images that I saw no way of getting my head around. I've learnt how to create a book, magazine, and all types of documents. Indesign could also be very efficient for card making aswell. Changing text, colour, rotation, editing size are all things I could easily do to an image on Microsoft Word, but on Indesign it looked very complicated. I eventually got the hang of it all and learnt my way around Indesign. I still feel that this was the most complicated programme in the process of contructing my production.

Another program that gave me a wider insight into technology was Photoshop. I found this very fun to use and I liked playing around with different alterations of my photo and deciding which one would go best one my cover, contents and two page spread. At first I found using the layer a bit tricky but I soon figured it all out. In terms of what I had learnt, I learnt how people who make the magazines do it all. I had never considered layers before when people made front covers but now it clearly makes sense that they do. I have also learnt the amount of work it takes to make a good front cover. I used to think you just had a picture and placed various pieces of text around the page but clearly with serious editing and concentration and other effects/techniques I can see now that its actually much more than that. Photoshop has taught me how serious and creative magazine editors and creators actually are. It takes more skill than I initially thought it did.

As I used Blogger, I learnt a load of techniques and shortcuts to make my blog look more presentable. When making presentations on Google Drive, Flickr and Prezi I wasn't sure on how to export those presentations onto my blog. However, through various Youtube tutorials I slowly figured out how to embed presentations to my blog. I had heard of embedding however I wasn't quite sure what it consisted of. Using Blogger has taught me all about it and now I have posted a range of presentations on my blog by embedding the link into the HTML section when I'm creating a post. I feel that I would be able to export presentations on other softwares using embedding and feel that I have learnt something very beneficial in the technology department.

Evaluation Q3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

When planning which media institution to distribute my magazine, I was mainly aiming for the top distributors such as Seymour, Frontline and MarketForce. When researching I became aware that MarketForce, CoMag, Frontline and Seymour are the top 4 primary distributors in the UK. I was however, curious as to how they distribute their products. I found out that distributors like MarketForce and Comag are actually owned by other companies like IPC and National Magazines. On the other hand, Frontline is not actually owned by its clients which are BBC, Bauer etc but do not offer their services to any other publishers.
The chart below shows the market share of the top 4 distributors in the UK. As you can see Frontline seems to have the larger market share. This could be predictable knowing it has clients such as BBC, Bauer etc.
I preferably would want my magazine to be institutionally similar to VIBE magazine, as that is the magazine that I had the most inspiration from. I liked how the magazine presented itself and how it is very well distributed. The magazine is also a huge success too, so institutionally I'd follow the steps of VIBE magazine. VIBE is in partnership with Time Inc. This is a very successful distribution/publishing company as it publishes over 130 magazines. These include Time, Essence and Entertainment Weekly. It also owns the UK media house IPC, therefore can take credit for other magazines like Marie Claire, NME etc.

Spin Media would most likely distribute my product as it handles a large amount of pop culture, music and entertainment magazines from VIBE to Spin to Celebuzz. It also handles online blogs, accounts and websites of the magazines it owns which would be efficient for my magazine as I intend to have online websites as I have displayed on the contents page with Facebook and Twitter links. I feel that this distribution company would efficiently gather a larger audience for my magazine as it clearly has good experience doing so. It handles official websites of that of Kim Kardashian and Britney Spears therefore I would be able to trust this company to handle my magazine and its work, account and websites too.

Another media institution I think would distribute my product would be Bauer Media. This company says it 'reaches over 19 million adults every week' which I think is a great audience to even consider my magazine. I have also acquired the knowledge that Bauer Media handles a lot of popular, everyday brands ranging from magazines like Closer, to radio stations like KISS FM and channels like 4Music. This is clearly a very popular and successful media institution that could distribute my product creatively and of a high standard. My magazine incorporates a lot of general magazine conventions therefore I feel that Bauer Media would look into my product. I also have the unique selling point of targeting to two genres of music (Rap/Hip-hop) therefore I hope Bauer Media would see that and take that on board.

Evaluation Q2

Evaluation Q1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of music magazines)
My chosen genre was Hip-hop/Rap initially. As the magazine planning went on I realised that I seemed to be keeping to solely rap rather than hip-hop however, my conventions do include both genres of music. My colour scheme was Red, black and white which I thought were appropriate colours for such a genre as colours like yellow or pink are deemed as more ‘pop’ colours and more ‘girly’ as it were. Rap magazine conventions seem to be more predominantly for the male genre however they do incorporate features that include both ultimately. Conventionally, rap magazines target a male audience (e.g. Vibe Magazine) and seem to feature more male artists. The artists usually featured in the magazines adopt serious facial expressions connoting a sense of confidence and almost aggression. The sense of presence is accentuated by a low angle and the representation of my cover model.

However, in my double page spread, I explore a new side of my star image which is laughter. The rap artists don’t usually smile and show teeth as this may show vulnerability and soften the serious image rap artists usually give out to their audience on their magazines. As you can see above, the vibe magazine cover with Eminem actually sticks to my chosen colour scheme that I had chosen which was a good template for me to use. Quite a lot of the rap magazines involve the colour scheme red, black and white; therefore it was easy to follow that convention when applying conventions to my magazine.

When doing my contents page, I followed the main conventions of these Empire contents pages. I liked the fact that the contents was simple and wasn’t crammed with pages and pages of information. I was looking for something like this as I wasn’t feeling a ‘jam-packed’ contents page, just a simple page displaying brief information of what is to happen in my magazine.

I used the convention of putting the page number large, caption of the page in red and additional info of the page in a smaller black font. I developed the conventions of this magazine by using this page to create more media attention for my magazine as a whole. I did this by displaying Twitter and Facebook links at the bottom left corner of my page, this would develop the convention by also persuading and reminding audiences of how to find out more information of my magazine.

I challenged the forms of convention by adding certain features to my magazine for my own benefit. The ‘Features’ section on my magazine and the ‘RAP-iD talks to MAMMI-C’ on my two page spread was a major challenge that I decided to do, which eventually became a success. I also challenged my colour scheme convention by incorporating the colour grey into my black, red and white colour scheme on my front cover. This worked better than planned therefore I decided to keep it. However I stuck to it more carefully on my contents and two page spread.

2- Page Spread Step-by Step

I've decided to have my 2 page spread on a black background. My 2 page spread model is quite simple, as I feel that most rap 2 page spreads aren't that extravagant. I feel that this enforces the colour scheme and also a range of my photos are against a black background. First, I made the background of my logo black so I could make it fit in with the black background.

I've currently started by extending the photo
across both pages. The space will be where the writing will be placed. I've remembered the page numbers as that is a key bit people forget so I've made sure I did them first. I've made the page colour black to keep to the colour scheme and I also feel it would be better this way as the Red looks nice on that background.

So far I have added part of the interview, the image, the key quote and the headline. I have kept to the colour scheme and used various techniques that follow my 2 page spread idea that I was working from. I need to add additional information underneath the main picture and also another quote. I may add a smaller photo incorporating the other artists I had taken pictures of.

I decided to reverse the sides of the page. making the picture go on the right instead of the left. I feel it looks better this way as the formation of the text and picture before looked a bit awkward, especially as I was going to include more text underneath the picture. Now it should look more sufficient.

2 Page Spread idea

This is my 2 page spread idea. Although its not from a rap magazine as such, I like the simple yet presentable way its been done. I'd like to make my spread along the lines of this.. ultimately. If anything I may crop the picture and put a bit more text underneath. This is from one of my Empire film magazines at home, where I had looked through all of them to find sufficient 2- page spread templates I could use for my magazine. This is a 2 page spread promoting 'The Internship' a movie with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Though, I realise that this genre doesn't relate to my magazine, I really like the template and intend to use it on my magazine.

Contents Template

I used this as a template for my contents page. I liked the simple display and how its not crammed with lots of page numbers and information, just brief and key bits. This was what I was trying to achieve as I made my design. From these contents, I incorporated the banner, positioning of the image and page numbers and colours when making my contents page. I didn't however include the mini image at the bottom right as I wasn't able to fit space in without messing up the page number formation. I did however like that I these contents pages also coincidentally maintained my colour scheme of red, black and white, which was efficient as I was working on this. I hoped that my layout showed a hint of this layout and due to my final production looking a little more simple, I hope the essence of this contents page can be seen.

Changes Made Part 3

First Front Cover

This was the intial front cover that I had tried to make. The inital response from my peers was not as I had intended as one comment I received was that my font looked as if 'It was from WordArt'. With a comment like that I knew quite a lot of changes would have to be made. The font, puff and maybe text could of done with changes. I did however receive compliments on the picture I had used as the background and the banner at the bottom, so I didn't change these areas when it came to improving what I had done.

This is an improved version of what I had done on my front cover. The new masthead received a lot of compliments and seemed to get a good response. A few things were added like the date, issue and price and the barcode which is essential to the magazine. A few tiny changes were even made to this choice for the final cover however the changes are minor e.g (less of a stroke on the puff, and smaller barcode size)

Changes Made Part 2

Bad Choice of Masthead

Initially I was apprehensive about using this masthead due to my fellow colleagues not particularly liking it. When I first found it however, I thought it would fit efficiently onto my magazine however advice from my audience made me choose otherwise. When I had tried to fit this masthead onto my magazine it didnt look right or suit my colour scheme either. My white, black and red scheme didn't go well with this as I had imagined it would.

This ended up being the final choice for my masthead. It is a drastic change from the intended choice, however I feel that this change was efficient in making my magazine fit in with my colour scheme and give a more 'rap' vibe as well. I liked the shadow effect that I had given the font as I didn't want a solid font I wanted that edgy effect to go with it. I realised that this font was appreciated more by my focus group and colleagues therefore I felt that it would be a good decision to chnage it. As the first masthead choice did not get the response I had initially intended it would get.

Changes Made Part 1

First Choice
I felt that the backdrop of my first choice was not as professional as I would've liked a rap magazine to look. It also wouldn't necessarily tie in with my colour scheme as I would of wanted the main colour to be black with extra red and white fonts, not the other way round.I think this change was for the better as I 'm definitely happier with the photo I chose rather than my first choice. Not many rap magazines are against a white background and if they are a large amount of editing is used to make up for it. I realised that this wasn't the best cover as I couldn't visualise it myself as a rap magazine cover. Therefore, if I couldn't even visualise this as the cover, how could I carry on?

Photo I Chose
I initially was going to have the photo of my model infront of a white backdrop however, this is the photo I have used for my front cover. I used the magic wand tool to smooth the background and get rid of the bizarre colour change on the background. I also cropped the length of the image as its clearly too wide to put on a front cover. I appreciate the background also as it ties in well with my colour scheme which was black, white and red. This worked very well with my newly changed brand which consisted of a bold red font as oppose to the silver one I had intended to have before.

Photos from Photoshoot 2

I would say more thought was taken into consideration when taking the photos for photoshoot 2. As we were able to use a light that we could manoeuvre around the models and we were in an environment where we were able to use different backdrops. Although both photoshoots used professional cameras, the use of more efficient equipment for shoot 2 made shoot 2 more eye catching and eligible for my front cover.

Photos from Photoshoot 1

In this Prezi we see a few of the photos taken in photo shoot 1. Majority of them won't be used in the magazine as I'll need to take some again and I genuinely don't have enough room for most. They were taken in a different location and with different people to Photo shoot 2. I purposely wanted a different variety of location and people I knew to be involved with the magazine.

Mamudas Outfit

Mamudas clothing

The first outfit for Mamuda was the leather jacket and crop top. I felt that leather jackets are worn a lot recently due to celebrities excessive use of them in public. Due to me having a leather jacket I felt that my model would be best suited to wear that in the photo shoot. The crop top is also ''in'' at the moment or has been ''in'' for a while. I felt the two matched well especially with the necklace that I thought may give the connotion of wealth as it does on the likes of Jay-Z, Kanye West etc.. however the gold necklace was more suited for the female model.

Photoshoot 2

The second photoshoot I took consisted of my colleagues Mamuda, Ade and Josh. I felt that they could enhance the magazine in a more positive as they seemed to have more a 'hip-hop/rap look' than the models I had used in Photoshoot 1. The black/white backdrops helped me get very professional pictures that I intend to use in the magazine. From advice of my colleagues, the white backdrop seems to be more sufficient for my front cover, wheras, the black backrop pictures would be more efficient on my 2 page spread. The clothing worked out very well and I'm very pleased of the contributions that everyne made to get these photos. This involved my colleagues and I brnging clothes that we felt would be efficient for this shoot.

This is one of the photos I took of Mamuda and Ade. I feel that the light was efficient due to the complications of bad pictures and complications seeing the models when we tried without the light. Most of the pictures seem to have quite distinct shadows which may be due to the positioning of the light as the light was quite close to my models. The shadows are quite annoying and I wouldn't like to see them on my front cover. I may try to solve this by using the magic wand tool which hopefully would be able to remove the shadow.
My colleagues seemed to like the white backdrop as oppose to the black backdrop. This wasn't the case for my models and I however, who preferred the black. Nevertheless a number of my colleagues have advised me to use this particular photo as the cover photo for my magazine. I like the idea of this and can see the black backdrop photos incorporated into my contents and 2 page spread.

This photo I particularly liked as my model has done an impressive job in connoting the 'serious' look I was going for. Artists in my genre don't usually smile or gleam their teeth they seem to keep a very stern look as we can see. The direct look into the camera with hidden emotion shows professionalism and will definitely be used in my magazine. I feel that the lighting work although there is an evident shadow in the back that I may need to try sort out. However this photo is one of the many that I was very happy with.

Photoshoot 1

I'd like to call this a practice photo shoot as I wasn't particularly happy with what I had done.
My first photo shoot consisted of my friends Wilfred Kiondo and Jamel MacFarlane. I felt that they had the appropriate look of a rap artist that I was going for therefore suited well for my photo shoot. I feel however that these photos will have to be taken again as I'm not particularly happy with the mise en scene involved in some of the pictures. I had taken quite a few photos in this area however these are the few that show the inappropriate mise en scene and position of photo.

In this photo I am very pleased of the position of my model and the hand gestures made with the piano. However the vase and microphone stand are not giving the best outlook of a rap magazine and in my opinion deem inappropriate therefore this particular picture would have to be taken again. Not showing the face of the model in this picture gives the audience the opportunity to focus more on the piano and not specifically the person playing it. I want my audience to prioritise music and not necessarily the people playing it.. although the people playing them are as important also.

This photo was to signify a rap battle of some sort. I feel that their positions give a really professional touch on a rap battle however yet again, an aspect of mise en scene is not to my liking. I feel these pictures have given me more incentive on what I was doing wrong when taking these. I feel the stances and hand poses are essential to the photo and when I ask them to take it again, I will ask them to do exactly the same poses they did before. The position of the mini stand on the table with the religious cloth on top drives away from the theme rap, which will mean I'll have to take these photos again. I feel, and as told by my colleagues, that this seems to infer that its a Gospel genre rather than Rap

The mise en scene in this photo seems to be non-existent as I've taken it against a white background. I now realise that its clear a door is positioned on the far left which is inappropriate and takes away the professionalism of the photo. The sight of the light switch also gives a sort of 'cheap' look in my opinion... However, due to the colour of the switch being gold and the appearance of the watch connotes wealth in a way and the sight of the door could just enhance the environment he's in.

This photo also happened to have bad mise en scene. I felt that this pose would relate to a similar pose of rap artist Jay-Z that I've found before. I felt it connotes seriousness and business. However some aspects of mise en scene weren't necessarily appropriate. The clothing was alright, however, the posters on the wall and some of the items in the background weren't necessarily appropriate. I'd hope to be able to take this picture again with the
mise en scene improved.

The picture below happened to be what I was going for with the picture above. I told my model to have his hands in a sort of pondering pose but also business like and with this image in mind. I hope to incorporate this specific image when I take the photos again, and when I do I also hope to use Jay-Z as a sort of 'template' and influence for the rest of my pictures.

Email Responses

These are responses from my fellow colleagues about my brand name. They seem to find the brand an interesting pun and play on words and as Shauna said its an 'interesting feature'. Their opinions have made me sure that 'Rap-id' will be the name of the brand as it seems to be appreciated and liked by the people I have asked.

Emails of opinions

I have emailed a few of my friends for their opinons on my magazine. I feel that their opinion will be essential to my final opinion as they are also in the age group of who my magazine is aimed at. I've told them the name I feel would suit best for my magazine and have left it open for them to put down any names that they would prefer also.

Location + Model Ideas

  • In terms of location, I intend to take the majority of pictures in my house. I have clear pale wallpaper where my model can pose infront of. I feel this is appropriate as my model will be easy to edit out when I start choosing different wallpapers for my magazine cover. I will try to take some pictures outside but I'm not sure that they will be on the final two page spread, contents or cover page in the end. The pictures will preferably all be taken inside. I intend to take a lot of pictures with different types of clothing and in different areas of my house.
  • I also think that the photography room would be another ideal place to take photos. With the right equipment and in the right environment I think I'd be able to take sufficient photos for my cover photo or my two-page spread. The backdrop would give it a more professional outlook and would be easy to photoshop when I am choosing the final pieces.
  • The model I have chosen is my friend, Mamuda Conteh. My friend has had modelling experience previously therefore I feel she will be a suitable person to be on my magazine. I will also choose Wilfred Kiondo who I feel has 'the look' of a hip-hop/rap artist therefore I would appreciate him in the magazine. I also know he's a fan of that genre so it should be easy to work with him on this. I have asked both of my models for their permission to work on my magazine and they have accepted my proposal.

I intend to use a Nikon Camera as I'm very pleased of the quality of my pictures when I've taken pictures with it before. I'm confident that this camera will deliver high quality pictures of my model and will ultimately be very efficient for my magazine in the long run

Masthead

I'd ideally want my brand to not be too flashy however I would also like there to be an element of wealth included. This may sound strange but I feel silver incorporated in the brand could prove to position my audience in a sufficient position considering my genre. I feel that this brand with the lining of gold gives the masthead a cool affect. The name 'RAP-id' (also chosen by those who took the questionnaire) is a creative term incorporating the genre Rap, of course the '-' separates the two so the audience can understand the pun. The term rapid means 'happening in a short time or at a great rate' I feel this is an appropriate name as the magazine will be quick yet efficient. Synonyms of the word Rapid are lively, fast and quick. I feel this is also suitable as the information is delivered at a fast pace and the information is brief but informative. Lively brings some character to the magazine aswell. The colours I also think would go well with the chosen Red, Black and White colour scheme therefore ultimately I'm quite pleased with this brand.

Cover Ideas for Magazine

With the audiences ideas for the questionnaire and what I personally think would be best, I have decided to choose a red, black and white colour scheme for my magazine. This is a typical colour scheme for this type of magazine so I'm very confident that this colour scheme will bring out the genre also. Colours like yellow and pink I would not have deemed appropraite for such a genre of music and would not think would attract my specific target audience of men aged 16-45.

In terms of clothing, I feel my cover star will have a very modest but inviting look. I say this because I don't intend my cover star to wear flashy and shiny clothing but flashy and shiny accesories. I would preferably see my cover star wearing a plain black t-shirt with a gold chain to show the wealth but also as chains are quite popular and worn by a lot of participants in the industry. I feel plain coloured clothing, like the emotion of the cover model, will not reveal anything. The model is to also keep a serious face not revealing signs of emotion and connoting the idea of seriousness and individuality. I feel plain coloured clothing also does this, especially the colour black.

A chain like this would be preferred for my model however any gold looking chain would be appropriate. I wouldn't want the model to look too flashy or 'over the top' as I feel that would take away the purpose of the magazine as its not about the clothing but the music. I also don't feel it efficient for the model as it gives off the impression that the only benefit of this industry is for the wealth, money and riches which is not a good message for the younger readers.
I may decide to give the model multiple chains but this depends on how I feel this looks when the pictures are being taken.

Hats are a typical accessory also when it comes to magazines or even artists of this genre. Especially snapbacks. This particular snapback of the 'New York Yankees' is worn by a lot of people in the industry and I feel this will give a recognisable and identifiable image if my model was to wear this. This also gives a more cooler outlook of the model especially with the gold chain. As mentioned before, I feel the accessories worn with clothing will outbring the genre more than the clothing itself.

Audience Questionnaire Results

After making my questionnaire I asked 15 of my colleagues ,who all accepted, to tell me their preferred answers to my following questionnaire. Of course some options are not exactly options I would have chosen, nonetheless, I respect my audiences opinion and intend to take them on board as I create my magazine.

Who is my Target Audience?

In my audience questionnaire, the audience response is essential to my final, chosen design of the magazine. I plan on asking my audience and fellow students about what they would like to see in a magazine and what I can include to make the audience more widespread. I intend to have a variety of opinions on the colour scheme, the contents and the price and with the results from this questionnaire I hope I can make a sufficient magazine that will be engaging for all and yet also meeting the audiences needs ultimately. The audience will widely contribute to this magazine and their opinions will be a main focus point when creating it. The main audience for this group will vary from teens to middle aged or just generally fans of the hip-hop/rap genre. Of course not all of the audiences preferences will be taken on board however I would hope to try my best to meet all of them. When it comes to the colour scheme I would not be able to include all colours as that would be a disaster!

The type of audience may differ between the ages of 16-45 and predominantly the male genre however all genders and ages are able to read if the genre appeals to them. I feel that in the modern day hip-hop genre that is the usual or stereotypical age range that listen to the music. I hope to mainly aim at this age range but also try not to single out any people who are not..
The publishers of magazines in the genre like Vibe etc are 'Intermedia Partners' and 'Spin Media'. Therefore I'd also preferably like to aim for these publishers ultimately also. The total circulation for Vibe magazine for Vibe Magazine in 2011 was a total of 301,408.

My target audience despite the age range would be those interested in the hip-hop genre, fans of specific artists or those wanting to get involved in the industry whether that be on screen or off. The audience play a big part of my magazine therefore their responses will contribute and help me greatly in the process. They will hopefully be intrigued by the information the magazine would have to offer due to them supposedly being fans of the genre.
